I just read one of the weirdest stories off the newswires. It is so disgusting, it made my already lactose-intolerant stomach turn over. In the undeniable category of WHAT WERE THEY THINKING, I bring to you…
CHINESE RESEARCHERS MODIFY COWS TO PRODUCE HUMAN BREAST MILK
Researchers at Agricultural University in Beijing have genetically modified 300 cattle to produce milk… that is identical to human breast milk. In the next three years, next to your moo and soy milk, you may be able to buy, well, boobie juice for the family.
I had no idea that there was such a dearth of human breast milk. Women have been making it for centuries to pass on to their screaming spawn… And if said ladies don’t want to breastfeed or their babies cannot take to it, infant formula is readily available. I don’t think Genetically Modified Cow Milk will eliminate either… well…
Now, even our motherly ‘duties’ are slowly being outsourced abroad. *sigh*
Which brings us to the question of ethics. Is it right to make cows produce milk that is foreign to them? The director, Dr. Li Ning, doesn’t give two rat’s asses. “There are 1.5 billion people in the world who don’t get enough to eat… It’s our duty to develop science and technology, not to hold it back. We need to feed people first, before we consider ideals and convictions.”
Those who have tasted the cow’s “milk” say it is stronger tasting and sweeter than cow’s milk. Jiang Yao added his two cents (with not one crack of a sarcastic smile): “It’s good…it’s better for you because it’s genetically modified.”
… So who’s going to be signing up for human trials?
